Bishop McGuinness on Vocations

Bishop Eugene McGuinness, third bishop of Oklahoma, is known in Oklahoma Catholic history as a man of vision, particularly regarding vocations. During his 13 year tenure, he raised seminarian numbers from a dismal 11 to an astounding 128, focusing on the need for a native clergy with ties to the dioecese for which they would live and preach. His vision was for a vibrant, viable Catholic population within the Bible Belt of the United States, and he knew that it had to start in the hearts of the Catholics of the local Church.

When speaking to benefactors throughout his diocese he came to be known for this marvelous quote:

"You have given me your money. Now give me your flesh and blood!"

May we all remember this in our daily evangelization. It costs more than the weekly tithe to build the Church. We must give our all. Amen.
